Frequently asked questions

What is SubGuard?+

SubGuard is an iOS app that helps you track all your recurring subscriptions in one place. It shows you how much you're spending, breaks down costs by category (streaming, productivity, fitness, etc.), and provides insights to help you identify subscriptions you've forgotten about or no longer need.

All tracking happens on your device โ€” your subscription data never leaves your iPhone.

Is my subscription data private?+

Absolutely. SubGuard processes and stores all your subscription data locally on your device only. We do not upload, transmit, or collect your subscription information. All tracking, categorization, and analytics happen entirely on your iPhone using SwiftData โ€” a local database technology.

Does SubGuard automatically manage my subscriptions?+

No. SubGuard is a tracking and awareness tool, not a management tool. It helps you:

  • See all your subscriptions in one place
  • Understand your spending patterns
  • Identify subscriptions you've forgotten about

You are responsible for canceling subscriptions directly with the service providers. You can cancel most subscriptions through your device Settings or the app that provides the service.

How do I add a subscription?+

You can add subscriptions in two ways:

  1. From the service catalog: Browse or search for your service (1,000+ pre-configured services with logos) and fill in the cost, renewal date, and frequency
  2. Custom entry: If your service isn't in the catalog, add it manually with the service name, cost, category, and renewal info
What information do I need to add a subscription?+

You'll need:

  • Service name: e.g., "Netflix", "Spotify", "iCloud+"
  • Cost: how much you pay per renewal period
  • Currency: USD, EUR, GBP, etc. (default: USD)
  • Renewal frequency: Monthly, annually, or custom
  • Next billing date: when the subscription renews
  • Category: Streaming, Productivity, Fitness, etc.

You can also add optional details like login username or notes.

How does the spending analytics work?+

SubGuard calculates and displays your subscription costs in multiple ways:

  • Monthly view: Total you'll spend in the current month
  • Annual view: Annualized costs (what you'll spend in a year)
  • By category: Breakdown of spending across categories (Streaming, Productivity, etc.)
  • Year in review: Annual summary including total spent, new subscriptions added, and canceled services

All calculations happen on your device in real time as you add or edit subscriptions.

Does SubGuard have a cloud backup or sync feature?+

SubGuard v1 uses local-only storage with SwiftData. Cloud sync via iCloud or CloudKit is not currently supported. If you uninstall the app or switch devices, you'll need to re-enter your subscriptions. Cloud sync may be added in future updates, and we'll notify users if that happens.

Can I export my subscription data?+

Export functionality is not available in v1 but is planned for future updates. Currently, all your data is stored locally on your device. To preserve it, keep a backup of your device or take screenshots of important subscription details.

What's the difference between the free and ad-free version?+

Free: All core features (tracking, analytics, year in review, categorization) with ads

Ad-Free ($2.99): One-time purchase to remove ads forever. Everything else stays the same.

There are no feature limitations โ€” it's purely about ads.

How do I cancel a subscription within SubGuard?+

SubGuard tracks subscriptions but doesn't manage them. To cancel a subscription:

If it's a digital subscription (App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, etc.):

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap [Your Name] at the top
  3. Select Subscriptions
  4. Find the subscription you want to cancel
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription

If it's another service (Netflix, Spotify, gym, etc.):

Contact the service directly or log in to their website/app to cancel.

Once you cancel in SubGuard, mark it as inactive so it doesn't count toward your spending totals.

Will I get reminders before subscriptions renew?+

Yes! SubGuard sends notifications before subscriptions renew so you remember what you're paying for. You can customize notification timing and disable them for specific subscriptions.

What iOS versions are supported?+
  • iOS 17.6 or later

SubGuard requires iOS 17.6+ because it uses SwiftData, which provides advanced local data management features.

How much storage does SubGuard use?+

SubGuard is lightweight and uses minimal storage. A typical installation is under 20 MB, and your subscription data storage (even with hundreds of subscriptions) is typically under 1 MB.
