HalalCheck is an offline-first halal ingredient scanner for iPhone. It helps you:

• Scan product barcodes to retrieve and analyse ingredient lists
• Photograph ingredient labels for instant OCR analysis
• Search any ingredient or E-code by name in 7 languages
• Browse a full E-code reference (E100 to E1521)
• Keep a history of every product you have checked

All analysis runs on your device. No account is required. No scan data leaves your phone.

HalalCheck uses a deterministic, rule-based engine against a curated database of 178+ ingredients and 446+ E-codes. It is designed to be conservative:

• Unknown ingredients are always classified as Doubtful, never Halal
• If any ingredient is confirmed Haram, the overall verdict is Haram regardless of other ingredients
• If any ingredient is Doubtful and none are Haram, the overall verdict is Doubtful

Verdicts are algorithmic estimates, not religious rulings. Formulations change without notice. Always read the physical label and consult a qualified scholar for your specific dietary needs.

An ingredient is classified as Doubtful when:

• It is not in the HalalCheck database (unknown ingredients are never assumed to be Halal)
• It has a source that can be either plant-based or animal-derived depending on the manufacturer (e.g. plain "lecithin" without qualification)
• It is an E-code with an ambiguous or contested status

A Doubtful verdict means you should exercise personal caution and investigate further before consuming the product.

When you scan a barcode:

1. HalalCheck checks its local cache for a previously fetched result (valid for 30 days)
2. On a cache miss, it queries OpenFoodFacts and UPC Item DB concurrently
3. The richer ingredient list is selected and stored in the local cache
4. The ingredient text is passed to the offline verdict engine for analysis

Only the barcode number is sent to third-party APIs -- no personal data accompanies the request.

Label scanning uses on-device OCR via Apple's Vision framework:

1. Point your camera at the ingredient panel on the product packaging
2. The app analyses the frame in real time and automatically detects the ingredient block
3. When confidence is high enough for 3 consecutive frames, the scan fires automatically
4. Results appear instantly -- no internet connection required

For best results: ensure the label is well-lit, flat, and fills the screen. No image is ever uploaded or stored beyond the local scan record.

The ingredient database includes aliases in 7 languages:

• English
• Arabic
• French
• German
• Turkish
• Indonesian
• Urdu

You can search in any of these languages and the engine will find matching entries regardless of which language the ingredient name is in.

We take database accuracy seriously. If you believe a verdict is incorrect:

1. Tap the report icon on the result screen to open a pre-filled email to our team
2. Include the product name, barcode (if applicable), the specific ingredient, and why you believe the verdict is incorrect
3. We review all reports and update the database when warranted
